Frequently Asked Questions
Feeding dogs raw food can be an excellent option if done correctly.
My favourite animal to treat is a difficult one, I do like working with birds. They can be noisy sometimes but I love them and I love their intelligence um there are also quite challenging as they are very sick by the time we first see them. And I do really like working with cats.
Advice I have for new vet graduates would be to know your why and to remind yourself regularly of your why. By that I am saying know why and establish why you are doing this. You are doing this because you care for the patients health and you need to be an advocate for the patients health. Our patients cannot speak for themselves, and its our responsibility to find out what’s wrong with them and to communicate that with the owner along with the correct diagnostic plan and the correct treatment plan. This can be more challenging than it sounds, vet to vet you will understand this one day. But it is important to establish your why. And let this drive you.
We recommend kittens be vaccinated at 8 weeks with a booster vaccination at 3 to 4 weeks later. They also require a rabies vaccination at 12 weeks of age. These vaccinations they need to be boosted annually to keep them current and protected. The vaccination at 8 weeks and 3 weeks later is against calici virus, herpes virus and the panleukopenia virus, which can be lethal. And then the rabies vaccination of course to protect them against rabies and so doing also protect humankind against rabies.
You should be worried about your dogs teeth from day 1. Dogs don’t brush their teeth so naturally plaque will form on the teeth everyday and this will soon be calcified to form scale which is too hard to be brushed off. It will creep into the crevices to the teeth compromising that glue or ligament between the gum and bone and teeth and this could lead to periodontal disease which would ultimately lead to abscesses and teeth falling out. So we do recommend to do a daily brushing with a good enzymatic toothpaste but also to have regular checks with your vet. We can keep a close eye on your dog’s teeth and we can recommend the necessary steps in prevention but also to take care of the dog’s teeth when we do need to do a dental scan, polish to remove that tough scale from the teeth and ensure good oral health.
We can indeed help patients with a history of pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be triggered, depending on the pathology, we would have a better idea as to what might be triggering it. We highly recommend to book a second opinion appointment with one of our vets and we can have a good look at the case history and take it from there. We have state of the art diagnostic equipment, excellent vets and ultrasonographers who can have a good look at that pancreas.
The most unusual animal I have treated thus far was a dolphin.
The most rewarding part of my job would be seeing a patient reunited with its owner after recovering from a serious disease. Seeing that human animal bond in action, that’s really rewarding.
